The Upper Secondary School students follow Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson EdExcel GCSE Programmes of Study in Grades 9 and 10, ensuring continuity from the Harrow Primary curriculum through to lower secondary before embarking on A levels in Grades 11 and 12.

As an internationally recognised qualification, the IGCSE provides a strong academic foundation and supports access to leading universities worldwide.

What is the IGCSE?

The Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE programmes are recognised by universities and employers globally for their academic rigour and international relevance.

The IGCSE is the most widely taken international qualification for 14-16-year-olds. It provides academic breadth and flexibility, enabling schools to tailor programmes to student needs. While Harrow Bengaluru does not offer the full global range, students are able to select from a carefully curated suite of subjects that supports both breadth and future pathways.

IGCSEs are taught in more than 140 countries and over 3,700 schools, including many in the UK that have adopted the qualification for its depth and international focus.

Purpose and Function of IGCSEs

IGCSEs are globally recognised qualifications that support progression to A Levels or the IB Diploma, university, and professional pathways in India and abroad. They can help students

  • Gain entry to colleges or universities internationally
  • Strengthen future career prospects
  • Meet English language proficiency requirements for study or migration (e.g. a Grade C in IGCSE English is accepted by many universities in English-speaking countries)
  • Develop transferable skills-critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication-that support success in school and life
IGCSE Courses run throughout Grade 9 and 10 with final examinations taking place in  the summer of Grade 10.

Following the IGCSE Options Presentation to Parents, students are asked to finalise their choices. When considering options, students should reflect on

  • What do they enjoy?
  • What are they good at?
  • What subjects will they need for their future A Level, IB Diploma or university studies?
  • Do their choices give them a well-balanced programme that plays to my strengths and interests?
